Tutoring

HOMEWORK CLUB

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons ESYAC volunteers pick up children from their residences and/or their schools and takes them to Redding First Church for Homework Club from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. during the school year. We begin with a full hot meal together followed by Circle Time. During this time we read a Bible story, sing songs and talk about issues pertinent to the children’s daily lives: drugs, domestic violence, bullying, etc.

Following Circle Time we move to one-on-one tutoring where we help the children with homework, specific skills suggested by their classroom teachers, and practice reading for understanding with the student . Each day closes with a recreation time: sports, games, music, drama, art, or crafts.

We are always in need of volunteer drivers, tutors, cooks and servers. Please consider joining the fun and excitement of working as part of a team with these amazing kids.

ROLE OF THE TUTORS

♦ Pray for and with their child.

♦ Arrive by 2:45 and stay until 4:45 on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school year.

♦ Stay by the child during Homework Club, helping them engage with whatever is happening.

♦ Give 1 week’s notice if you cannot be at Homework Club or call before noon if you have an unexpected conflict. A calendar is maintained to indicate planned absences.

♦ Appreciate the impact of a tutoring/mentoring relationship on the life of the individual child. Youth who have a positive adult role model in their life are more likely to succeed in school and later life.
